How Applicants Are Evaluated
We admit students on the basis of their potential for achievement in research, scholarship, and teaching. Because our program uses an apprenticeship model, a close match between your research interests and those of your desired faculty advisor is a critical factor in our decisions. The admissions committee will consider any additional material an applicant wishes to present.
The number of students we can accommodate is limited, so it is not always possible to admit every qualified applicant.
Which Program to Apply To
- Applicants with a bachelor's degree should apply to the M.A. program, even if their ultimate goal is a Ph.D. Students who earn the M.A. at NMSU are considered for the doctoral program after completing the degree; a formal reapplication is not necessary.
- Applicants with a master's degree in psychology from another institution may apply directly to the Ph.D. program. Admission is conditional upon completion of a qualifying exam, typically an oral presentation of the student's master's thesis.
